Why Does Video Buffer Every Evening? How to Find the Real Cause
If streaming runs fine all day but starts stuttering at the same time every evening, the culprit is almost always network congestion during peak hours — not your app, device, or plan.
The most common complaint to ISP support isn't "my internet is down" — it's "my internet works, but everything buffers in the evening." That's not a coincidence. This problem has a predictable schedule and specific causes you can test yourself in 15–20 minutes.
Peak hours are the prime suspect
Home network congestion typically peaks between roughly 7 PM and 11 PM on weekdays — exactly when people get home from work and everyone starts streaming, gaming, and jumping on video calls at once. During those hours, the same shared infrastructure (the local node, the cable running to your building, the equipment in the basement) carries far more traffic than it does during the day, and that capacity isn't unlimited — it's split among every subscriber connected to the same local hub.
That's why you get the classic symptom: video loads instantly at 3 PM and starts stalling at 8 PM, consistently, day after day. That's not a random glitch — it's predictable peak-hour congestion.
Test 1: Wired connection vs. Wi-Fi
The first step is separating two very different problems: is this your ISP's network, or your home Wi-Fi?
Connect your laptop or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and run a speed test in the evening, right when video is buffering. Then run the same test over Wi-Fi.
- If wired and Wi-Fi speeds are roughly the same — and both are slow — the bottleneck is outside your home, on your provider's side.
- If wired speed is fine but Wi-Fi is noticeably slower — the problem is your home wireless network, not your ISP.
Test 2: Compare speeds at different times of day
The second test compares the same metric across different hours. Measure speed and latency (ping) over a wired connection in the morning, afternoon, and evening for 3–5 days in a row, and write the numbers down.
If your wired speed drops by 30–50% or more specifically in the evening, and this repeats day after day, that's systemic congestion on the provider's side — not a one-off glitch at home. With numbers like that, it's worth contacting your ISP's support and asking them to check node load in your area — a conversation backed by actual data goes a lot further than "it's slow for me."

If the problem is your home Wi-Fi
In the evening, it's not just the outside network under strain — your own home network takes a hit too. Your neighbors are also settling in to watch something, and their routers create interference on the same Wi-Fi channels. On top of that, more devices in your own home turn on at once — TV, phones, laptops — all fighting over the same channel.
What helps:
- switch your router to a less crowded channel (2.4 GHz is usually packed with neighboring networks in the evening; 5 GHz tends to be less congested);
- move the device you're streaming on closer to the router, or connect it with an Ethernet cable;
- disconnect devices you're not using from Wi-Fi while you watch;
- update your router's firmware — older versions handle a lot of simultaneous connections worse.

If only one service buffers, but everything else is fine
There's a separate case worth noting: your speed test looks completely normal, but video on one specific platform loads slowly while every other site and app runs fine. Here the cause isn't overall bandwidth congestion — it's something about the specific route your traffic takes to that service's servers, or how your provider handles that particular type of traffic during peak hours.
Providers can physically see the shape of your traffic — its volume, how the data is being transferred, sometimes the server addresses involved — and may apply different rules to different kinds of traffic, especially when their own infrastructure is under strain. Testing this theory is simple: if one service in particular is slow despite a normal speed test, try watching the same video over a different connection (mobile data, for example) or switch the connection route on your device. - Test your speed over Ethernet and over Wi-Fi right when video is buffering.

- If it's Wi-Fi — switch your router's channel, disconnect unused devices, and connect your streaming device with a cable.
- If wired speed is also consistently slow in the evening — log the numbers over several days and contact your ISP's support with the data in hand.
- If one service is slow despite a normal speed test — try a different connection and set up a stable route ahead of time on all your devices.
