What You're Risking on an Open Network

A public hotspot usually skips a password entirely or shares one generic password with everyone in the room. That means the network admin — and sometimes any other guest with the right skills — can technically see which sites you visit, and in some cases intercept unencrypted data outright.

The main risks:

  • Sniffing — on an open network, data packets can be captured right out of the air.
  • Evil twin hotspots — someone sets up a network with a similar name ("Airport_Free_WiFi_2"), and you end up connected to the wrong one entirely.
  • Man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks — your traffic routes through someone else's device, which can read or alter it along the way.
  • Auto-reconnecting to old networks — your phone remembers network names and may automatically join a fake hotspot with a familiar-looking name.

No need to panic, though: using public Wi-Fi doesn't automatically mean you'll get hacked. But if you're typing in passwords, entering card details, or checking work email, the connection needs to be encrypted all the way from your device to the destination service — not just "inside the coffee shop."

  • Set the network type to "Public" (not "Home" or "Work") — this limits how visible your device is to others on the same network.
  • Turn off file and printer sharing while you're traveling.
  • Make sure the firewall is on, in case it was manually disabled at some point.
  • Check your browser's saved password autofill — if you're ever on a shared or borrowed screen, it's worth turning off temporarily.
